After one of the mildest Canadian winters on record last year, forecasters are calling for a return to typical Canadian conditions in 2012-13, with cold temperatures and lots of snow expected to hit most of the country.

It is a bleak forecast for drivers, who can look forward to slippery, icy roads and reduced visibility as the snow flies. With the return of the Re-Tire Your Ride campaign, Active Green + Ross wants to ensure drivers can safely stick to the road in the worst conditions winter can throw at us.

“Winter is just around the corner, but you can reduce some of the stress and worry about driving in the winter by ensuring your car is properly equipped with a good set of winter tires over the colder months of the year,” says Andy Chiodo from Active Green + Ross. “It is best to be prepared before the first big snowfall hits, and with our Re-Tire Your Ride campaign you have a chance to get more than just a new set of tires for getting ready for our tough Canadian winter.”

Car owners who “Re-Tire” their ride for this winter with the purchase of four Michelin® or BfGoodrich® tires can enter for a chance to win a Fiat 500 or one of two certificates for free gas for a year. The contest runs from October 22, 2012 to January 22, 2013.

The whistling winds, blowing snow and frozen roads of a harsh Canadian winter can make driving atreacherous adventure if your car is not properly equipped. Winter tires are designed for optimum performance in snow and ice, with specially-designed tread patterns to dig into slippery roads and a softer rubber compound that better withstands sub-zero temperatures than regular or all-season tires.

Modern cars are equipped with more safety features than ever before — like ABS anti-lock braking systems, stability control and even all-wheel drive — but they will not be enough if your car cannot grip morning black ice, snow, or slushy roads.

“Winter tires are vitally important for your safety and security over the winter months,” says Chiodo. “They help ensure your car not only stays on the road, but enables you to have more control when steering and stopping. This quite literally can mean the difference in stopping in time at busy intersections and city driving.
